Law is a set of rules created by the state that forms a framework to ensure a peaceful society. When those rules are broken sanctions can be imposed.
The concept of law is complex and has many different interpretations. There are a wide range of books and debates that present various ideas about the nature of law. A common theme is that law shapes politics, economics, history and society in a variety of ways and serves as a mediator between people.
In addition, the law is a social institution that is constantly evolving as society changes. Consequently, it is not always easy to keep up with changes in legislation and legal concepts. This is especially true in areas of law which deal with issues of greater public awareness, such as criminal law, family law and property law.
Other important themes in the study of law include the relationship of law to political structures and the role of lawyers as advocates for their clients. The legal profession is also an area of interest, as are laws regarding education and the qualifications needed to become a lawyer. Other areas covered by the law include:
Felony – A serious crime, usually punishable by more than a year in prison. Indictment – The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence to bring the accused before the court for trial.
Jury – A group of citizens selected by a judge to hear and decide cases. In the United States, a grand jury is usually required for felony prosecutions.
Discovery – The examination, before a trial begins, of the facts and documents in the possession of both sides by lawyers for the purpose of helping them prepare their case. The judge and attorneys try to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) that their side has the stronger case.
In addition, there are articles on specific legal procedures and terms:
Trial – The final hearing in a lawsuit, at which the facts of the case are presented and witnesses are called. The judge or jury decides whether the plaintiff or defendant is guilty of the charges.
Appeal – A request for a higher court to review the decision of a lower court or tribunal, usually on grounds of improper procedure or an incorrect interpretation of the law.
Law is a very broad subject with many different applications. Other important topics include the constitution; ideology; political party; political structure; and the relationships of law to the social sciences. Religion has also played a significant part in the development of law, particularly through Jewish Halakha, Islamic Shari’ah and Christian canon law. Modern law also includes immigration and nationality law, which deals with the right to live and work in a nation-state other than one’s own; family law; and commercial, or transactional, law. In addition, there is a growing body of literature on the intersection of law and the biosciences.
